In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet-or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harbouring their own dark secrets. ’Dark Shadows’ stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz and Gulliver McGrath. The film is released in cinemas May 11th. Look out for a more in-depth interview with Chloe Moretz and Eva Green closer to the films release date.

Your character Angelique Bouchard, I think it’s safe to say that she’s a bit cuckoo?

Eva Green: Angelique is definitely a bit cuckoo (laughs). She’s a very big character, she’s mad about Barnabas. When we first meet her it’s in the 18th century, and she’s a servant working for the Collins family. She has this affair with the young master, Baranabas, but he breaks her heart when he rejects her for Josette. And yeah, she’s not very happy (laughs). She’s a witch and she takes her revenge by turning him into a vampire and decides to lock him in a coffin for several centuries….as we all do, you know, when we get a bit hurt (laughs).

How was it shaping your character with Tim Burton?

Chloe Moretz: Not only is he hands on, he asks you what you want and what you want to have in the character – and he breaks it down with you. He breaks down the look, not even just the look, her soul, who she is, what she is, what she’s doing, what she’s thinking about. He breaks down every little thing. For instance he’ll be like, “Chloe, I’m thinking about this, what do you think?” Now if you don’t like that, it’s totally fine, just tell me what you want and we’ll do that. But here’s my idea, let’s collaborate, let’s make this special, let’s make this our thing.” It’s not his way or the highway. He’s special, he’s Tim Burton!

With Carolyn, she wants to be so different from the family, she wants to live in the big city. She wants to be free, she wants to be a true hippie and just live and be who she wants to be. But, you know, she’s this 15/16 year old who lives at home, she still lives in Collinsport – which is the middle of nowhere. And she thinks her mum is holding her back, and she doesn’t like that.

What was that experience like for you Eva?

Eva Green: I’ve always been a big big fan of Tim’s, so it was like a dream come true. He’s a very sensitive man, very humble. And he’s so creative, you get near him and it’s very electric. It’s contagious. It’s as if he has five people in his head and it’s always very active. He’s great because he’s so open to suggestions, like Chloe said. That is a real luxury for an actor. And he really understood Angelique’s character, he was great to collaborate with.

You two have some great scenes opposite Johnny Depp’s Barnabas Collins, how was he to work with?

Chloe Moretz: Johnny Depp as Barnabas, I can’t say enough amazing things about him. He is one of the coolest and most humble guys that I’ve literally ever met. And he goes out of his way to come in every morning and be like, “Hi, how are you? Are you ok? How was your weekend?” He goes out of his way to be abnormally nice to you (laughs). On top of that, I can’t say enough amazing things about his acting. With ‘Dark Shadows,’ it’s Johnny Depp mixed with Tim Burton so it’s the most amazing vampire I’ve ever seen.

Eva Green: He’s such a generous actor, a real gentleman. He’s very intense, he has the most intense eyes. He doesn’t move, then like thunder his eyes are locked (laughs). He’s very strong, he takes risks, very brave. And also he does a lot of homework, he makes sure he’s prepared. He was amazing.
