In the Starz original series Camelot, premiering on April 1st, French actress Eva Green plays Morgan, the beautiful and ruthlessly ambitious daughter of King Uther, who wishes to claim her right to her father’s throne. However, she has not counted on Merlin’s (Joseph Fiennes) plans or the existence of Arthur (Jamie Campbell Bower), her newly revealed half brother. In her pursuit of power and her willingness to do absolutely anything to take the throne that she believes is rightfully hers, Morgan gives herself over to dark forces that threaten the court of Camelot from within.

In a recent interview to promote this new epic series, Eva Green talked about stepping into the role of such an iconic character, working with both Joseph Fiennes and Jamie Campbell Bower, getting to shoot in Ireland, and the fantastic costumes she gets to wear. She also talked about her Sundance film, Perfect Sense, with Ewan McGregor, and the possibility that she will play opera star Maria Callas in the biopic, Callas. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

Question: What’s it like to step into the role of Morgan?

EVA GREEN: It’s a great character. It’s full of colors, and it’s a gift. At drama school, I always wanted to play dark characters, like Lady Macbeth and Cleopatra, so it was a dream. It’s not a clichéd role. She’s not evil. I see her more as damaged. She believes herself to be the rightful heir to the throne, but because she’s a woman, she’s denied the throne and she will do absolutely anything to get it back.

The new Starz original series Camelot, expected to air in the Spring of 2011, is an epic period drama with a talented cast that includes Joseph Fiennes as Merlin, Eva Green as Morgan, Jamie Campbell Bower as Arthur and Tamsin Egerton as Guinevere. This 10-episode production takes a fresh approach to the powerful story of the legendary King Arthur, weaving it with the authenticity of the most classic medieval tale of all time.

During a recent interview, series star Joseph Fiennes and writer/showrunner Chris Chibnall talked about bringing this epic story to life in a fresh way, setting things up so that they can continue telling the story for multiple seasons and how being on Starz allows them to explore all aspects of the characters and story.

    (…)

Chris, can you talk about how you assembled the rest of this cast?

CHIBNALL: That’s really the great joy of the series. We’ve got Eva Green doing her first television series. We’ve got a wonderful Arthur in Jamie Campbell Bower, who is a really terrific actor. We’ve got Tamsin Egerton as Guinevere. We’ve got some great guest stars coming in. We’ve got Fitz Regan, Sinéad Cusack and Sebastian Koch, from The Lives of Others. When it comes down to it, this is a show with an amazing ensemble, and my job is to keep feeding them and let them do great stuff. The caliber of acting in this show is something I’m really proud of and shall try and take as much credit for as possible, even though it’s down to the actors.

What is Merlin’s relationship with Morgana in this?

FIENNES: They dance around the position of who’s going to be king of the hill, in terms of the negotiation and the attainment of power. We’ll see that dance play out historically. Morgana was the daughter of King Uther, who was the right-hand man. So, their relationship has history, and we’ll see exciting stuff develop between the two of them, and see who feels they should have that position of power.

CHIBNALL: Yeah, there’s going to be a lot of contact between Merlin and Morgan, which is what we call her. There are going to be a lot of battles. It’s a story of a guy and his half-sister, who both have equal claims to the crown, throne and the realm. She’s denied because she’s a woman, so Merlin brings Arthur to the crown and she’s going to resent Merlin’s actions, which will play out through the season. They will have a lot to do with each other because putting Joe with Eva on screen is one of the great joys of this show.

There’s a new 10 part miniseries about King Arthur and the mythical Camelot coming.

    Here are the details:

Channel 4 has bought the rights to Arthurian romance Camelot starring Joseph Fiennes and former Bond girl Eva Green.

The 10-part series, based on Sir Thomas Malory’s 15th-century novel chronicling the history of the Arthurian legend, Le Morte d’Arthur, is in production in Ireland. Camelot, which is scheduled to air next year, features Jamie Campbell Bower as Arthur, Fiennes as Merlin and Tamsin Egerton as Guinevere. Green is to play Morgana.

The series has been executive produced by Douglas Rae of Ecosse Films – maker of shows such as BBC1′s Mistresses – and Graham King of GK Films. It is a co-production between Irish company Octagon and Canada’s Take 5.

In the US the show will air on cable channel Starz and sales have also been made in the Netherlands, Germany, Israel, Russia and Asia.

Channel 4 has secured the UK premiere broadcast rights to ‘Camelot’. The Irish-Canadian Co-Production is set to air in 2011 on Starz in the U.S and, now, Channel 4 in the UK. The deal was brokered for Channel 4 by Acting Head of Acquisitions, Penny Harris and GK-TV President Craig Cegielski.

‘Camelot’ is based on Thomas Malory’s 15th century book, ‘Le Morte d’Arthur’ and is set to weave authenticity into a modern telling of the Arthur legends that is relatable to contemporary audiences. In addition to Channel 4 in the UK, ‘Camelot’ has been sold to RTL (Netherlands), DBS (Israel) and Sony AXN (Pan-Asia). GK-TV has additionally sold all rights in numerous other territories and regions including; France, Germany, Russia & CIS, Pan Eastern Europe, Pan Latin America, and Pan Middle East.
