Phillippe, Green, Riley join ‘Franklyn’

McMorrow directs futuristic thriller

Ryan Phillippe, Eva Green and newcomer Sam Riley will star in first-time director Gerald McMorrow’s futuristic thriller “Franklyn” for the Recorded Picture Co.

Pic, set in contemporary London and a future metropolis dominated by faith, weaves the tale of four lost souls divided by two parallel worlds on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates.

Jeremy Thomas produces, with Alexandra Stone and Nick O’Hagan co-producing. Peter Watson is exec producer.

Brit thesp Riley turned heads in “Control” for his portrayal of troubled Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. The cast also includes Bernard Hill, Susannah York and Art Malik.

McMorrow previously directed award-winning short “Thespian X.”

The feature’s $12 million budget is being financed by the U.K. Film Council’s Premiere Fund, Film 4 and Aramid. HanWay Films is handling international sales.

Ryan Phillippe and Eva Green to Star in Futuristic Thriller ‘Franklyn’

Posted Sep 20th 2007 5:33PM by Patrick Walsh

The upcoming futuristic thriller Franklyn will offer something for the fellas (the gorgeous Eva Green) and something for the ladies (the man-gorgeous Ryan Phillippe). The film will be set simultaneously in both contemporary London and a faith-dominated future metropolis without separation of church and state. According to Variety, the film will tell the story of “four lost souls divided by two parallel worlds on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates.” It’s Sliding Doors meets The Matrix! Sounds mighty confusing, but I’m intrigued. The film will co-star Sam Riley, who plays Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis in Control (read James’ positive review here).

First-time director Gerald McMorrow wrote the screenplay and will direct the film. According to IMDb, John Hurt is in the Franklyn cast as well, but since that’s not part of the Variety announcement, take that with a grain of salt for now. The movie has undergone a lot of casting changes, it seems. Last we heard about the project, Ewan McGregor was attached to star, but it appears that is no longer the case. Paul Bettany was attached to the Riley role at one point. I don’t know much about Riley, but I do know getting Phillippe for McGregor is something of a step down. Phillippe is improving, though, I must give him props for holding his own against an incredible Chris Cooper performance in the too little-seen Breach. Green is probably best known as Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, but holds a special place in my pants heart for her almost entirely nude performance in The Dreamers. Dreamy.

Waiting anxiously for the result of this “experiment”. Daring choice for Eva.
P.S. It is noteworthy that the reporter P. Walsh doesn’t hide his feelings about Eva. A sensitive soul…

I’m excited about this project. It’s good that Eva’s testing the waters here. I think “Franklyn” is a bold choice but it’s premise is really fresh considering the films that normally come out. I just hope McMorrow will live up to expectations and his execution, as well as the editing, will make this project a success. Also, i hope the chemistry between the actors will be evident -or else, it won’t work for a film like this.

  3. ana Says:

any idea when they start to film this?

Does anyone know when they’ll start shooting?

  5. George Says:

ana and EvaAnne: Probably they have already started shooting (middle of September according to Eva’s management on 2 of August info to Mariana).

  6. George Says:

More fresh news: 27 of September starts the shooting according to IMDBpro

  7. Aseo Says:

  8. Monique Says:

    Intriguing plot, very intriguing indeed…

I’m getting more and more reasons to hit the cinemas, thanks to Eva!!!

But I think it’s a little sad that many people, (e.g. this writer) can’t mention Eva without thinking of her nudity in The Dreamers in well, slightly lecherous terms…true, she did take a risk in that movie by going nude, and it did pay off, but that’s not all she’s about!!!

    Good Luck on “Franklyn”, Eva!!!

  9. George Says:

Monique: I absolutely agree with you: If someone remembers Eva in the Dreamers only for the nude scenes, (s)he has missed the whole picture (and this is not fair for Eva’s outstanding debute).

  10. brulette Says:

Monique: Thanks for speaking up! Why is it still okay for men to objectify women? You’re right, the writer sounded like a stupid lech.
It’s okay to celebrate a woman’s beauty and sexuality, while also respecting her humanity & talent. Respect being the key word.

George: I agree; people who just focus on the nudity in The Dreamers missed the whole movie.

  11. spot Says:

Monique, brulette and George: i completely agree with all of you. i think its’ sad how women are objectified nowadays. I’m more annoyed over the fact that people seem to remember her from The Dreamers as “the actress who bared it all” and yet there’s MORE TO HER THAN THAT! i think the writer’s testosterone was working overtime when he wrote that article 🙁

  12. Monique Says:

    Ha! Probably….

It’s just that some people aren’t so open to things like that…it’s as if they’re afraid of sex…or they view Eva’s nudity as something dirty to gawk at…

Granted, the pre-marital sex thing was a little uncomfortable with me…I am after all, a Catholic (with respect to those with different views)…but still, I don’t get the whole deal about Eva’s being nude, after all, many actresses have done that before (e.g. Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut, Naomi Watts in 21 Grams)

  13. spot Says:

Monique: her nudity in The Dreamers got so many attention because she’s a newcomer, the whole premise of the film (screenplay and production), it’s execution, and Bernardo Bertolucci himself -he’s like the “master” of film eroticism and he brings a certain amount of shock value, and he did with The Dreamers. i think that’s all this nudity attention on The Dreamers stemmed from.

  14. George Says:

More Franklyn news: According to imdbpro (www.imdbpro.com), Franklyn started shooting on last Monday (24/9) in and around London. Sam Riley, Eva’s co-star in the movie, is also represented by Tavistock Wood (Eva’s agency).

  15. Monique Says:

Well, if shock is what Bernardo Bertolucci, was aiming at, I think he and Eva, Michael Pitt and Louis Garrel definitely succeeded…

I saw Michael Pitt in “The Village”, and if you ask me, he looked better in The Dreamers…

Well, hope Eva does well with “Franklyn”. I hope Ryan P. won’t overshadow her in this movie…he’s bound to get more attention, being Reese’s ex, but still, Eva should get her rightful share of the spotlight…
